2007-10-17 [Eleanor]: Instead of giving us “famous first lines”, why not pull a good sentence out of the middle of a book that will become a first line for us? Then there won’t be that baggage associated with the opening of a famous book or story. I think it best still if you make the decision about the sentence--then we won’t have preconceptions.

SO, I guess I'd love some of both, and i'd really really love it if they were ambiguous, mysterious, or unusual.
I tend to write in stream of consciousness for my first drafts at least, and a sense of mystery is more helpful than a firm story line at that point :P
